Martha Root, class of 1895, was the first Bahá'í to attend the University of Chicago. She became one of the most prominent and cherished Baha'is of the century, lending her services to the Bahá'í cause in travels that took her around the world seven times. The Bahá'í message of spiritual renewal and social justice that inspired Martha Root continue to be promoted on campus by the University of Chicago Bahá'í Association.

Although Bahá'í's have been present and active at our university for most of its history, the extent of activity which the Association undertakes is influenced by the ever-changing student demography. Our current group of members is particularly diverse and active, with members from the undergraduate and graduate population representing a variety of departments and disciplines.

There are multiple weekly activities which focus on various aspects of the Bahá'í Faith, with more being planned for the future. These include an ongoing series of discussions on the theme of spirituality (what it would look like in a variety of contexts), in-depth studies of passages or books from the Baha'i sacred writings, devotional gatherings, and social events. |
